There were several question marks surrounding the Mississippi State Bulldogs heading into the 2023 season as Zach Arnett takes over the head coach position with the passing of legendary Air Raid guru Mike Leach.
MSU had some expected sputtering at the beginning of the season-opener against Southeastern Louisiana, particularly in the first half, but eventually found its footing and recorded the type of dominant win that was anticipated over an FCS opponent.
Several players stood out, with linebacker Nathaniel Watson leading the defense with 8 combined tackles (3 solo), 1.5 sacks, 1.5 tackles for loss, 1 pass breakup, 1 quarterback hurry and one forced fumble.
Running back Jo'quavious Marks was the team's most outstanding player on offense, making an impact in both the passing game and the ground game as he carried the ball 19 times for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns with 4 receptions for 59 yards.
