Mississippi State LB Jett Johnson Named SEC Defensive Player Of The Week

Mississippi State linebacker Jett Johnson was recognized for his efforts on the field during the 31-24 overtime win over Arizona.

Mississippi State football (2-0) keeps a perfect record moving into Week 3 after securing a gritty, 31-24 overtime victory over the visiting Arizona Wildcats on Saturday in Davis Wade Stadium.

Standout linebacker Jett Johnson had a lot to do with the Bulldogs coming out on the right side of the win column, named SEC Co-Defensive Player Of The Week for his efforts throughout the contest.

This marks the first time the Tupelo, Mississippi native has earned the honor.

He led the team  in tackles (11), sacks (1) and interceptions (2) while also tying for the team lead in tackles for loss (2).

In the eighth game of his career in which he has recorded double-digit tackles, Johnson also tied his career high for sacks in a season (2). His pair of interceptions came in the first quarter and the fourth quarter -- the first time in his career that he has had multiple takeaways through the air in one contest.

Through the first two weeks of the season, he tries for the conference lead in interceptions while ranking fifth in total sacks (2) and 12th in total tackles (17).

Johnson and the Bulldogs will look to keep the momentum rolling as they host the No. 14-ranked LSU Tigers in Starkville, Mississippi. Kickoff is set to 11 a.m. on Saturday.
