KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The lights weren’t too bright for Jackson Lovich and Brock Lucas at Kauffman Stadium.

For the second time this year, the Tigers went into extra innings against the Jayhawks. The first time was exactly one week before. Some aspects were like deja vu. In the last game, the Missouri bullpen carried them into extras and it was the same in this one. In the last game, there was one player who powered the Tigers to their win.

The main difference being Kansas heading home with the win instead of Missouri. The Tigers dropped the game in the tenth inning 4-3 to the Jayhawks.

Lovich earned the two hardest parts of the cycle and was part of all three runs that were scored in the game. He tripled in the bottom of the third in order to put him in scoring position for Thomas Curry’s single, he was at the plate when Jeric Curtis stole home on a fielding error and sent the game-tying home run out of the park.

Lovich’s effort would be much needed since Josh McDevitt put the Tigers behind early in the game. He couldn’t seem to keep men off the bases. In the first inning, it was walks and in the second, it was hits to deep right. He fell into trouble with those hits, allowing two to score after a double, triple and sacrifice fly.

Then the job to keep men off base fell to Ian lohse, who succeeded and put up two clean innings before being removed for Charlie Miller. Lohse only allowed one hit in his outing. His outing was short, since it was a bullpen game.

It wasn’t Miller’s night, however. He couldn’t seem to make it past the first out of the inning. A single and two walks loaded the bases. Kerrick Jackson brought in another man to try to get the third out and it was up to Brock Lucas to try to get out of the inning.

Lucas wasn’t able to escape the bases loaded jam and brought a runner home in the fifth inning with a walk. Things turned around for him after that, as he came back to easily dispose of the next 13 batters in order to help keep the Tigers in the game. He ran into some trouble in the top of the ninth and Jackson went back to the bullpen for Ryan Magdic to close.

Kansas took the first and last lead in extra innings. A double, advanced runner and a sacrifice fly did it for the game. Missouri wasn’t able to force their way back and ended the game on a ground ball double play.

Missouri heads back home for their SEC home opener against Kentucky on Friday, March 22 at 6 p.m. CT.

How it Happened:

  • Kansas brings in a run after a double, advanced runner on a fly out and then a sacrifice fly in the top of the tenth inning. 4-3 Jayhawks
  • After retiring 13 straight batters, Brock Lucas ran into some trouble and was replaced with Ryan Magdic in the top of the ninth.
  • Jackson Lovich homered to left center to tie the game. 3-3
  • Jeric Curtis singled and advanced on a groundout, he then stole third and home on a throwing error 3-2 Jayhawks
  • Charlie Miller walked in a run 3-1 Jayhawks
  • Charlie Miller came in to pitch for Ian Lohse in the top of the fifth.
  • After a Jackson Lovich triple, Thomas Curry singled to bring him home. 2-1 Jayhawks
  • Ian Lohse comes in to pitch in the top of the third.
  • Chase Jans hit a triple into the deep right corner to score the man on third. A sacrifice fly then brought Jans in. 2-0 Jayhawks
  • Jeric Curtis made a sliding grab in the outfield, but it was deemed that the ball hit the ground first. After umpire discussion, the ball was said to be caught and the player was out.
  • Despite walking two and hitting a batter to load the bases, Josh McDevitt escaped the inning with no runs allowed.
  • First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
