Accolades Elude Mizzou Football as Awards Week Winds Down

Although Tigers fans had hoped Cody Schrader might take home the Doak Walker Award for best running back, they ended up disappointed.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be a quiet night for Mizzou football fans.

Tigers running back Cody Schrader was one of three players up for the Doak Walker Award as the nation's best running back, which was announced at the 2023 Home Depot College Football Awards.

He didn't win. Ollie Gordon II of Oklahoma State took home the Doak Walker after leading the nation 1,614 rushing yards, with 20 rushing rushing touchdowns. In comparison, Schrader, who won the Burlsworth Trophy (best player who began career as a walk-on) earlier in the week, had 1,499 yards and 13 touchdowns, along with 22 receptions for another 191 yards.

Moreover, it was also revealed Friday, albeit later that Shrader had finished eighth in Heisman Trophy voting, sandwiched between Golden and Michigan running back Blake Corum. It's the highest finish by a Mizzou player since Chase Daniel was fourth in 2007.

What was really disappointing, tough, was what happened during another part of the show. When the All-American selections by the Walter Camp Foundation were announced, Schrader and defensive back Kris Abrams-Draine were both on the second team. Mizzou, 10-2 and set to play Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, didn't have any first-team honorees.

The Walter Camp selections are one of five services the NCAA used to determine consensus and unanimous All-American status. The Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America, the coaches association and The Sporting News selections will all be announced next week.
