Ohio State Baseball's Matthew Graveline, Henry Kaczmar Named Big Ten All-Freshman
Ohio State Buckeyes catcher Matthew Graveline and shortstop Henry Kaczmar earned spots on the Big Ten's All-Freshman team on Tuesday following impressive debut seasons.
Graveline started in all but one of the 50 games in which he appeared and scored the most runs on the team with 45.
The Centerville, Ohio native also tallied 56 hits and 12 stolen bases, both of which were second-most among the Buckeyes, along with a .287 batting average.
As an infielder, Graveline recorded a third-best 234 putouts with only four errors.
Kaczmar hit .293 over 55 games and led the Scarlet and Gray with 61 hits and 208 plate appearances. The Walsh Jesuit graduate's 55 starts were the most of any of his teammates, including Ohio State's 20 upperclassmen.
Kaczmar scored 29 runs during the season, with two coming in the season finale against Michigan on Saturday.
The pair of infielders had some of the highest RBI numbers on the team, with Kaczmar recording 46 and Graveline bringing in 35.
Kaczmar went yard at the plate seven times, tying senior Marcus Ernst and coming just shy of the most Buckeyes home runs behind graduate Cole Andrews' eight. Graveline, in turn, sent four balls out of the park by the season's end.
Each of the Ohio State freshmen had their fair share of multi-hit games. Kaczmar finished with 17 such contests, and Graveline recorded two or more base knocks in 13 outings.
Both Graveline and Kaczmar will no doubt be invaluable parts of Ohio State baseball's journey to becoming a powerhouse program in the Big Ten conference over the coming seasons.
