Ohio State Baseball Sweeps Michigan, Extends Longest Win Streak in 14 Years

The Ohio State Buckeyes have won their last nine games and close out the regular season with three home wins against their rivals.

The Ohio State Buckeyes baseball team completed their regular season-ending sweep of Michigan with a 7-2 victory on Saturday.

The Buckeyes (31-25, 9-15 Big Ten) have won their last nine games including the last three against the Wolverines (26-26, 13-11 Big Ten), tying their longest win streak in program history.

The trio of W’s spanning Thursday to Saturday also marks the first time Ohio State has swept Michigan in a series since 2016.

The Buckeyes outhit the Wolverines 10-8 in two fewer at-bats, and came away with a wider gap in the strikeouts department, prevailing 27-17 in punch-outs.

Center fielder Trey Lipsey and first baseman Caden Kaiser each recorded two hits, the most on the team, in their three trips to the plate during the game.

Kaiser also shared the team lead for RBIs with catcher Cole Andrews. The pair of infielders combined for four of Ohio State’s seven RBI, splitting them evenly.

Continuing the trend of twos, shortstop Henry Kaczmer scored a couple of runs with a hit and a walk on three at-bats.

Pitcher Gavin Bruni started on the mound for the Buckeyes and earned the win after six full innings of work. Through those half-dozen frames, Bruni allowed five hits and two earned runs alongside 12 strikeouts and a single walk.

Will Pfennig, Josh Timmerman and Wyatt Loncar also pitched in the game. The three relievers combined for three hits, four strikeouts and a walk over three innings.

Ohio State sits 11th in the conference standings, meaning they will not be one of the top-eight teams receiving a bid to the Big Ten Tournament in Omaha, Nebraska.

This lack of an appearance also bodes ill for the Buckeyes’ hopes at a berth in the national bracket, meaning Saturday was the final game of the year for the Scarlet and Gray.

All that being said, this was still a strong start to the tenure for first-year head coach Bill Mosiello.

The former TCU helmsman was hired last offseason to lead a program that finished 20-30 in 2022, and a winning season with as solid of an ending as his guys had is nothing of which he or his staff should be ashamed.

The future looks bright for Ohio State baseball, and the greatest rivalry in college sports should be even more fun now that the Buckeyes are competitive on the diamond once again.
