Ohio State Guard Bruce Thornton Named Captain in Team Revote

The Ohio State Buckeyes had a revote of team captains, and in a rare feat, true freshman guard Bruce Thornton emerged as one of the highest vote-getters.

As Bruce Thornton broke his recent scoring slump with a career-high 22 points against the Michigan Wolverines Sunday, he also did something that freshmen don't typically do for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Head coach Chris Holtmann said Monday the team revoted on its captains "just a couple days ago," and Thornton was tabbed as one of the Buckeyes' captains for the final eight regular season games.

"I wanted our guys to have a say in revoting for the leadership on the team," Holtmann said. "I just thought it was a good time to do it, and they revoted and he got a significant number of votes. First time we've really had a freshman do that."

Holtmann, who is in his sixth season at the helm, said Ohio State "typically" revotes on captains once and it is "earlier in the year." He said "with such a new group" that "it was important to do it again."

The three captains at the beginning of the season were guard Isaac Likekele and forwards Zed Key and Justice Sueing.

Were any of the three not voted as captains this second time around?

"I would certainly not share that publicly," Holtmann said. "I'm not going to put our players on blast if that were to happen."

This honor had been growing for Thornton throughout the season as he has been in on multiple captains' meetings prior to officially being named one.

This season, the Alpharetta, GA. native has started all 23 games, averaging 8.9 points per game while dishing a team-high 60 assists.
