Oklahoma State Basketball Hires Mississippi State Assistant as Associate Head Coach

Mississippi State assistant James Miller will be joining Steve Lutz in Stillwater, assisting him on the bench.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys have made their first hire to join Steve Lutz and his basketball program. It took just one week as the program's head coach for Lutz to make his first hire.

Mississippi State assistant James Miller is joining Oklahoma State's basketball program as the associate head coach, reported by 247Sports' Justin Frommer. The former Mississippi State associate head coach was recently promoted to his current role from an assistant role.

Miller has been a part of Chris Jans' staff since 2019 -- where he coached alongside him at New Mexico State. He's a graduate of Colorado State. With the Bulldogs this past season, Miller got experience in the NCAA Tournament after Mississippi State saw a first-round exit.

Like Lutz, Miller is bringing recent NCAA Tournament experience to Stillwater, something that will be invaluable as a perennial 20-win program looks to get back to that standard. For Lutz -- the program's 21st head coach -- building out a solid staff should be near the top of his priority list as basketball in Stillwater is in need of a major spark.

The Cowboys' coaching staff is set for a busy month as the basketball transfer portal closes on May 1. Oklahoma State -- with five scholarship players on the roster -- has plenty of space to fill with the portal, which will be crucial in building a tournament-quality team.
