Keys to the Game: What Oklahoma State Has to Do to Take Down the Wildcats

Oklahoma State hasn't exactly gotten off to a great start to begin the 2023 season, beginning the first third of the regular season with a 2-2 record that includes what is likely the most embarrassing loss of the Mike Gundy era to South Alabama. Still, not all hope is lost. If the Cowboys can find a way to right the ship this week and take down Kansas State, the road ahead looks a whole lot brighter. Here is what Oklahoma State has to do to pull off an upset against the reigning Big 12 champions.

Attack Through the Air

If the Pokes want to win on Friday, they're going to have to get it done through the air. Kansas State's pass defense ranks 113th in the country, giving up over 260 passing yards a game. If Oklahoma State can pass the ball well while spreading the field, it will give them an opportunity to put points on the board early in the game, as well as pave the way for their rushing attack since rushing yards will be difficult to come by

Force Turnovers

Oklahoma State has to do something that they haven't done all year if they want to win this game. They have to force turnovers. Through four games, the Cowboys have only forced two turnovers all season long, with one fumble recovery and one interception. They will have to find ways to take the ball away from the Wildcats in this one.

Protect the Quarterback

Kansas State has already racked up 14 sacks through four games, making them one of the best in the country at getting to the quarterback. Compound that with the fact that Oklahoma State's offensive line has struggled early, and there's a potential recipe for disaster. If there was ever a time for Charlie Dickey to get his offensive line turned around, it's this game.
