Rebels Land Transfer Infielder J.D. Urso From Tampa Spartans

Ole Miss gained a transfer piece on the diamond on Friday afternoon.

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss Rebels gained another baseball transfer piece on Friday, picking up Tampa Spartans shortstop J.D. Urso.

He is the son of Joe Urso, the head coach of the Tampa program, and Joe has won five Division II titles in his career. Chase Parham of Rivals was the first to report the news on Friday.

Over four seasons with the Spartans, Urso hit .356, including hitting .374 in the 2023 season, and reached base in a school record 56 straight games. A hitter for average, Urso only hit nine home runs during his four-year stay at Tampa, but he did drive in a combined 118 RBI during that time while striking out 87 times.

Defensively, he finishes his career at Tampa with a .950 fielding percentage, committing at least two errors in each of his four seasons. Statistically, one of his worst seasons defensively was actually the 2023 campaign where he committed 11 errors on the year.

Ole Miss will look to use some of these transfer pieces to right the ship after a lackluster 2023 season. The defending national champions failed to reach the SEC or NCAA Tournament during their title defense, and head coach Mike Bianco's contract was not rolled over following the disappointing campaign.
