Pitt Football Offensive Position Battles Are Few But Important
PITTSBURGH -- The story of this offseason has been dominated by who the Pitt Panthers lost, particularly on offense. Record-setting quarterback Kenny Pickett is knee-deep in the NFL after the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted him in the first round. So is receiver Taysir Mack, who signed a free-agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Fellow pass-catcher Jordan Addison made an infamous decision to transfer to USC and offensive coordinator Mark Whipple left to take the same position at Nebraska.
The losses were high-profile and deserved the headlines they earned. But the Panthers, for all they lost, will actually enter training camp at the beginning of next month with most of their offensive depth chart more or less set. That said, the positions that do have open competition are important ones.
Pitt will have to figure out how they staff the backfield, primarily the quarterback position. Nick Patti and Kedon Slovis will duke it out in camp and, if history is any indication, Pat Narduzzi and the Panthers coaching staff will not give many hints as to who is leading the competition until late in the
