CHICAGO — In its third meeting with Ohio State this season, Purdue picked up an 80-66 win to advance to the Big Ten Tournament title game. the Boilermakers were led by star center Zach Edey's 32 points.
Edey shot 12-of-25 from the field and went 8-of-11 from the free-throw line. Despite notching just one rebound in the entirety of the first half, he finished with a team-high 14 boards.
"I just kind of stuck with it," Edey said after the game. "I executed the game plan. I just tried my best to score the ball every time I touched it."
The Buckeyes started hot in the first half, fueled by freshman guard Roddy Gayle. He scored 15 of his 20 points before halftime and was 5-of-6 from the 3-point line. His effort gave the team an eight-point lead over the Boilermakers with 8:18 left before the break.
But in the final eight minutes of the first half, Purdue outscored Ohio State 21-5 and went into the locker room on a 17-3 run.
When scoring slowed in the second half, the Buckeyes brought the game to within six points but could only muster two baskets from the field in the last five minutes of the game.
Junior guard Brandon Newman tallied 15 points for the Boilermakers, including eight in the final three minutes, while freshman Braden Smith finished with 14.
"You can kind of see the heart of Ohio State, and those guys really played well in this tournament," Purdue coach Matt Painter said. "We were fortunate to play them after they've already played three games and we've only played one."
