A Look At The Series History Between South Carolina's WBB Team & NC State

While much of the national media is talking about the matchup between Iowa and UConn or Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers in the NCAA Women's Final Four this coming Friday, the first matchup will feature more of a regional and local flavor to it, as Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks take on the NC State Wolfpack. In some respects, neither team was expected to be in the current position they're in, as Carolina was the preseason ranked 5th team in the country after replacing their entire starting lineup from last season's Final Four team. In contrast, the Wolfpack weren't even ranked to begin the season. Now, they'll both battle for a shot at the national championship in three days.

We began our preview of the matchup yesterday by diving into some numbers on NC State. In this piece, we'll look back at the history of the series between the two teams and how the Gamecocks have faired in recent years:

Series History (Dating Back To The 1977-78 Season)

All-Time Record: 12-20

Record Under Dawn Staley: 4-2

Record In Postseason: 1-3

Last Meeting: No. 1 South Carolina defeated No. 5 NC State 66-57 in the 2021-22 season in Raleigh

Since Staley took over the program in the 2008-09 season, South Carolina has enjoyed more success against the Wolfpack compared to decades past. However, each of the six games under her watch have been close, with only one game ending with a double-digit point margin. The Gamecocks are 2-1 against NC State when playing away from the Colonial Life Arena in Dawn's tenure.
