Hometown Kid: Bankston Walters Bringing 'Elite Work Ethic and Energy' to Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – For Southern Miss head coach Christian Ostrander and his staff, it doesn't take a long drive to find elite baseball talent. Year after year, Mississippi has produced some of the most highly-talented prospects in the entire country. With Oak Grove outfielder Eric Booth Jr. being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles with the No. 7 overall pick in July, this marks three consecutive years a Mississippi high schooler has been drafted in the top 10 of the MLB Draft (Konnor Griffin in 2024 and JoJo Parker in 2025). While none of those specific players were committed to the Golden Eagles, it shows the tip of the iceberg of talent that lies within the state.

Southern Miss has an incredibly talented freshman class coming in for the 2027 season. Some have even gone as far as to say it's the best freshman class the Golden Eagles have ever had, considering that seven of the players coming in were named to the Clarion Ledger's 2026 Baseball Dandy Dozen.

Bankston Walters, a two-way player from Presbyterian Christian School in Hattiesburg, is among the players on that impressive list. Due to his physical presence, standing 6-4 and weighing 225 pounds, he was intimidating on the mound and in the box throughout high school. For this week's Southern Miss baseball player profile, we spoke with Prep Baseball Mississippi's fifth-ranked prospect for the Class of 2026 to find out exactly what the Golden Eagles are getting.

Walters By The Numbers

In his senior season at PCS, Walters was dominant on the mound, posting a 0.58 ERA with 140 strikeouts over 72 innings pitched. Additionally, he finished with a .354 batting average, six home runs and 20 RBI. It doesn't stop there either. He finished his senior year with a .582 on-base percentage and 1.240 OPS. Walters was named the 2026 PineBeltNews Pitcher of the Year.

"All the coaches [at PCS] played at a high level and had been in my shoes," Walters tells Southern Miss Golden Eagles On SI. "They pushed me to keep going through adversity."

In the 2026 MHSAA Class 3A State Baseball Championship Series against Booneville, Walters threw a complete game shutout in Game 1. His mix includes four pitches: fastball, curveball, slider, and changeup. After a dominant 8-2 win in Game 2, the Bobcats won their first Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 3A State Championship in their very first year after transitioning from the Midsouth Association of Independent Schools (MAIS). Walters was named MVP of the championship series.

'Elite Work Ethic, Competitiveness, and Energy'

To better understand Walter's determination to reach his potential, we reached out to Will Whittington, one of his personal strength-and-conditioning trainers at Traction Sports Performance in Hattiesburg. While at PCS, Walters trained at Traction for two years.

"The biggest thing that separated Bankston was his relentless mentality he brought to everything we asked him to do," Whittington said. "I can speak for everyone [at Traction] when I say we are extremely proud of what he has accomplished and the work he has put in to earn this unique opportunity."

Additionally, Whittington gave a brief preview of what kind of player the Golden Eagles are getting in Walters: "Southern Miss is getting a guy who knows how to work, compete, and bring energy every single day, and I believe that mentality is what will allow him to be successful at the Division I level."

Hometown Kid

As mentioned, the Clarion Ledger released their annual Dandy Dozen list earlier this year, honoring the top 12 high school baseball players in the state of Mississippi for the 2026 season. Walters, along with six other Golden Eagle signees (OF Henry Abt, OF Trey Barnes, IF/P Logan Buckley, P Taylor Latham, UTIL Jackson Meehan, and INF Justin Word), made the list, further growing the excitement that already surrounds Southern Miss baseball.

One question we've been consistently asking new players is: Why Southern Miss? Growing up in the Hattiesburg area, Walters always dreamed of wearing the Black and Gold one day.

"My dream was always to play at Southern Miss," Walters said. "It truly worked out perfectly."

While the Golden Eagles return a majority of their production from last year's pitching staff, Walters could find himself in a bullpen role in 2027, similar to the one LHP Bruce Littleton had last year. Additionally, given Walters' talents both as a pitcher and hitter, it'll be interesting to see how Coach Ostrander platoons his time.
