Christian McCaffrey Makes History After Winning NFL Rushing Title

When Christian McCaffrey was traded to the San Francisco 49ers last season, there was an expectation that head coach Kyle Shanahan would completely unlock him.

That of course has happened, and it may be happening at a level that is higher than people realize. This has been the best season of the former Stanford star's career, as he has posted career-highs in rushing yards, yards per carry, and touchdown catches. He has been in the MVP conversation all season, and former Stanford alumnus Richard Sherman believes he should win the award over current favorite, Lamar Jackson.

McCaffrey was already named to the NFL Pro Bowl, but was officially able to add another feather to his cap following the final week of the season. As posted by the San Francisco 49ers social media team, McCaffrey officially won the NFL Rushing Title.

McCaffrey led the league in rushing yards with 1,459, which is without him playing in the season finale for the 49ers. The reason that this makes history is the fact that he's the first 49er to do so since Joe “The Jet” Perry did so twice, in both 1953 and ’54.

When asked about the accomplishment after the 49ers' loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, McCaffrey revealed he has bigger goals on his mind as reported by the Mercury News.

“That’s awesome,” McCaffrey said after the 49ers’ 21-20 loss to the Rams. “But it’s on to the next step.”

McCaffrey, who is nursing a calf injury, and the 49ers will have some time to rest up, as they clinched the top seed in the NFC and get a first-round bye. They are set to face winners of the lowest-seeded wild-card divisional round on either Jan. 20 or 21.
