Fran Brown gives key injury update at Syracuse football’s 4/1 spring practice

In this story:
Syracuse’s practice was open to the media for the first time since freshman wide receiver Calvin Russell’s injury was announced.
Through a post on SU football’s twitter, head coach Fran Brown noted that Russell would “miss an indefinite period of time.”
On Wednesday, Brown addressed the media’s questions on Russell and touched on several other topics. Brown shared what he’s been seeing from SU’s other pass catchers and looked ahead to SU’s spring game.
Here are three takeaways from the media session following SU spring practice.
Calvin Russell had surgery, new timeline
Brown said SU’s top ranked recruit in its freshman class had surgery and could play later this season. Brown forecasted that Russell could return to action in late October or November.
Russell, who sustained the non-contact injury while running, will be back with the program tomorrow, Brown said.
“A minor setback for a major comeback,” Brown said. “He’s a good guy, a good kid. He’s the spark of our football team so he’ll be back tomorrow.”
Russell had lofty goals for this season before the injury. Brown added the presence Russell brings to the program.
“He was killing practice, scoring 2-3 times a day,” Brown said. “[He’s] joyful to be around, one of the best kids I’ve been around in a long time.”
With Russell recovering, Cole Weavers, Tyshawn Russell and Umari Hatcher may be options on the outside. Brown said Hatcher has been a great leader in the wide receiver room. Brown added that rising-sophomore Darius Johnson is getting better, too.
“Darien Williams is [making] a big play every day,” Brown said.
Brown said Syracuse has a deep receiver room, which is filled by veterans and young players.
Staff coming together
Brown took an internal look at his coaching style while also updating what he’s been seeing from his recently-put-together staff.
Brown doesn’t take long breaks between reflecting on how he coaches. His style is more fluid.
“I reassess every week,” Brown said. “Just reassessing everything every week and get locked in. I get a lot of advice from the coaches on our staff.”
Brown said he’s doing everything he can to give the Orange a chance to go out and compete. He is continuing to strive toward winning a championship.
As for SU’s other coaches, one Brown highlighted Wednesday was wide receiver coach Josh Gattis, who joined the staff about one year ago. He came to the Orange with 15 years of coaching experience and Brown said Gattis is “one of the best in the country” at what he does.
On the other side of the ball, this season will be the first with new defensive coordinator Vince Kehres, who comes to SU after leading Toledo’s strong defense in 2025.
“We have a veteran staff, there’s a lot of guys that have been coaching a long time,” Brown said. “We’re all working together.”
Brown has gotten coaching contributions from former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron recently too, who he said will come back monthly. He added that SU alumni will come back a lot to help his program.
Spring Game expectations
Brown used the word ‘compete’ when previewing SU’s spring game scheduled for April 11. The roster will split into two teams – orange, nicknamed ‘Team Ernie’ and blue, nicknamed ‘Team Jim.’
The Orange will hold a draft one day before the game. Members of the program will be able to pick teams.
“We’ll come out and just compete,” Brown said. “We’ll have a lot of fun.”
Even with the fun, Brown said his program will be getting down to business.
“We like contact. We’ll make sure guys are hitting. There’s a lot of details that we’re still fixing up so we can go out and be extremely physical but be able to take care of each other.”
Brown added that he wants the lower bowl of the JMA Wireless Dome packed and that he will have a “special guest” by his side.
