In this story:

Syracuse football has lost its first player off of the spring roster to the transfer portal as defensive lineman Jatius Geer entered the portal on Wednesday. Geer recorded 33 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks after starting in 12 games last season. He was expected to be a key contributor along the defensive line in 2023.

Geer came to Syracuse as part of its 2021 recruiting class out of Belton-Honea Path in South Carolina. He signed with the Orange over offers from Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Kansas State, Memphis, Temple, Central Florida and several others. He redshirted during the 2021 campaign, but emerged as a started in 2022.

The loss of Geer certainly hurts the defensive line, which had depth issues last season that were exacerbated by multiple injuries. With a change in defensive coordinator, even with the same system, losing a starter at a position that has struggled with health and depth hurts going into the post spring period.

The good news is that Syracuse can use the portal to replace who it loses to it. Meaning the Orange could look to find a transfer defensive lineman to take Geer's spot and would have the ability to compete for a starting position.

Mike's career started with his own free blog as a way to vent following sporting events. Shortly thereafter, a network of basketball sites called Coast 2 Coast Hoops asked him to run their Syracuse site.
