Syracuse football has landed a commitment from junior college defensive back Berry Buxton, who was on an official visit over the weekend. Buxton is listed at 6-2, 205 pounds on the Santa Barbary City College website. He originally played for Olympian High School in California before going the junior college route.

"It's a mix of a lot of things," Buxton said on his commitment. "Getting a top tier private education while also playing football is at the top. Being here,I will have plenty of support to complete my bachelor's and master's. I see myself learning everything I need to be able to get to the league here. I was also drawn into the feeling of family and loyalty that I could feel here between all the coaches, players, GAs and even around campus."

Buxton is the third commitment of the day for the Orange. He joins junior college teammate Jakobie Seabourn and offensive line transfer David Wohlabaugh as Syracuse pledges. All three visited over the weekend.

During the offseason, Syracuse lost a starting safety and starting cornerback through the transfer portal. They also brought in a transfer corner and safety but wanted like to add more experienced depth that can compete for a starting spot. Buxton fits that bill. At 6-2, he has the size to play safety but is also versatile enough to play corner if needed as well.

Despite turnover, the Orange secondary is now expected to be deep and versatile. With the improvement of young talent, returning veterans and incoming players, Syracuse should, once again, have one of the better secondaries in the ACC.

Syracuse finished the 2022 season 7-6 and are looking to make it two straight seasons with a postseason appearance in 2023. Back are quarterback Garrett Shrader, tight end Oronde Gadsden, several other offensive weapons including Damien Alford and LeQuint Allen. The Orange will feature a new offensive (Jason Beck) and defensive (Rocky Long) coordinator this season.
