Aggies Lose TE Donovan Green For Season

Donovan Green will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL during Saturday's scrimmage.

COLLEGE STATION -- Donovan Green became a staple of the Texas A&M Aggies offense as a freshman. Now, he'll have to wait to make his impact felt once more.

Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher confirmed Monday that the sophomore tight end suffered a torn ACL during Saturday's scrimmage and would be out for the remainder of the season. Green was expected to be one of the top receiving threats on offense after a productive freshman campaign.

A top recruit from Dickinson (Texas) High School, Green played in 10 games, starting in four, during his first season on campus. He totaled 23 catches for 233 yards and two touchdowns. His best game came against No. 15 Ole Miss when he registered career-highs in receiving yards (48) and yards per catch (12.0).

Green became one of the top targets once projected starting quarterback Conner Weigman took over the first-team offense. In their final three games, the duo connected for nine catches for 88 yards and a touchdown.

While Green's departure sours the offensive perspective on paper, Fisher said he feels content with the upside of the remaining unit. Senior Max Wright elected to return for his sixth season and has been A&M's primary blocking tight end for two seasons.

Fisher also mentioned the growth of sophomore Jake Johnson, redshirt sophomore Fernando Garza, redshirt freshman Theo Melin Öhrström, and freshman Jaden Platt.

"Jake Johnson has had a very good camp," Fisher said. "Theo caught like eight balls in the scrimmage. I think he's really starting to grow and emerge....Jaden Platt's another young guy that's gotten a lot of reps in there that's doing well."

Green was limited during spring practice after suffering an ankle injury and did not play in the Maroon and White Game. Fisher mentioned that through the start of fall camp, the 6-4 tight end had been working with the second-team offense while working his way back to full strength.

"You hate losing Donovan," said Fisher. "That's a very experienced player, and you don't want to lose anybody, but the guys here have had very good camps."

The Aggies finished 5-7 in 2022, raking 93rd in total offense and 101st in scoring (22.8 points per game). First-year coordinator Bobby Petrino is expected to call plays on offense after taking over for Darrell Dickey this spring following a three-year stint at FCS Missouri State.

Green's injury was first reported by 247Sports. A&M opens the season against New Mexico at Kyle Field on Sept. 2 at 6 p.m.
