Aggies WR Evan Stewart In Walking Boot, Spring Football in Doubt?

Texas A&M Aggies leading receiver Evan Stewart could miss the remainder of spring football depending on the severity of his injury.

Nothing will be set in stone until official word comes from Texas A&M Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher, but they could be without a key offensive piece for the remainder of spring football.

Receiver Evan Stewart was seen in a walking boot on his right foot during the OT7 Austin tournament Sunday afternoon. Stewart was also seen in a different photo using a pair of crutches to move around from place to place.

Stewart, one of A&M's top pass-catchers last season, is expected to be a focal point of the offense in 2023 under new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino. The Frisco native proved his vertical presence last season while working with three different quarterbacks, averaging 12.2 yards per catch.

One of the top playmakers in the 2023 recruiting class, Stewart was at his best when working with fellow freshman Conner Weigman. A native of Cypress (Texas), Weigman proved to be the most consistent passer of the trio that started in 2022, throwing for 898 yards and eight touchdowns against zero turnovers.

Combined, Stewart and Weigman finished with 13 receptions for 139 yards and a touchdown. Fisher, who enters his sixth season, said last week that every position — including quarterback — would be an open battle this spring, meaning that Weigman will have to earn the title of QB1 over redshirt junior Max Johnson.

"It's what spring is about," Fisher said. "Nobody has anything. I don't care what position you are. You have to prove yourself each and every day."

Fisher won't meet with reporters until Thursday to discuss the severity of Stewart's injury. Currently, A&M is expected to utilize its five leading receivers from a season ago. Ainias Smith, who suffered a season-ending leg injury in Week 4, is back practicing at 100 percent.

The Aggies also have Moose Muhammad III, Jalen Preston and Noah Thomas, all of whom finished with at least five catches for 51 yards.
