Aggies QB Conner Weigman 'Head And Shoulders Above' Where He Was in 2022

In his freshman season, Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Conner Weigman completed 73-of-132 passes for 896 yards and eight touchdowns.

Some college football pundits don't view Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Conner Weigman in the top tier of Southeastern Conference quarterbacks.

And, though he tries to ignore what is being said and written about him, this isn't lost on the Aggies' sophomore gunslinger.

"It's noted. It's in the camera roll," Weigman told TexAgs' Billy Liucci. "It is what it is. I can't control that. Just go out and put in work and prove everybody wrong."

Weigman split time with Haynes King and Max Johnson last season and made the most of his opportunity in his first year in College Station, as arguably the most efficient quarterback on the Aggies' roster last season. Now, ahead of 2023, he finds himself in another starting battle with Johnson, but appears to be using his growth in the offseason to pull away in the competition.

"It's head and shoulders above where I was," Weigman said. "It's just crazy to think about it, how far I've grown just since I've been here. It's about to get real scary for some defenses."

Weigman was a part of Texas A&M's loaded recruiting class that was the nation's best in 2022. The five-star prospect from Cypress, TX. was the No. 22 player nationally, the No. 2 quarterback, but the sixth-best recruit in the Aggies' 2022 class — just to put into perspective how deep of a cycle it was for Texas A&M.

Weigman was the No. 3 option in a quarterback carousel for the Aggies last season after King was benched and Johnson was injured and did fairly well in five games.

He completed 55.3 percent of his passes for 896 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions — the best ratio of any of the three Texas A&M quarterbacks last season. In four starts, he led the Aggies to a 2-2 record, including an upset victory against then-No. 6 LSU with both losses by a combined six points.

Against then-No. 15 Ole Miss, he went 28-of-44 for 338 yards and four touchdowns, almost pulling off the Aggies' second upset of the year in a 31-28 loss.

He said the chemistry in the offseason has only grown.

"We just did a lot of team stuff. Having people over at the house, just trying to get to know everybody a lot more than what we were doing beforehand," Weigman said. "It's just been really good seeing the camaraderie of the team coming together and it's showing up on the field in the spring and in practices."

With new offensive-minded guru in offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, who has over 15 years of Power Five experience, look for Weigman's production and dynamic play style to only get better in 2023.

"[Jimbo Fisher's] laid off. He let coach Petrino run the show a little bit on the offensive side. It was good," Weigman said. "Jimbo, he's always there giving you pointers on what you need to do, where your eyes need to be, proper footwork and all that. It's a good mixture between both of them, and I'm really excited. I enjoyed the whole spring."
