Aggies Football 2023: Breaking Down The Quarterback Battle

Spring is over, and our college football brains now turn to the fall. Aggies fans are focused on the upcoming season and after a 5-7 season by coach Jimbo Fisher and Friends, there are questions surrounding the program.

One of the biggest question marks is at the quarterback position.

After suffering through the Haynes King and Zach Calzada era - which thankfully didn't last long - there should be light at the end of the tunnel. Last season, freshman Conner Weigman and LSU transfer Max Johnson, the son of former NFLer and Super Bowl champion Brad Johnson, combined for 116 for 203 passing for 1,413 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The biggest improvement over the options from the season prior? Interceptions. Weigman and Johnson combined for zero interceptions on the year. Calzada and King threw 12 picks together in 2021.

Weigman and Johnson have a distinct advantage for 2023, and Bobby Petrino takes over the offense. Weigman is clearly the future of the program, but don't sleep on the southpaw Johnson.

Johnson holds the advantage with regard to experience, but Weigman's arm talent and mobility is clearly his strength. Fisher will most likely maintain that the role of starter is up for grabs during the fall, but it sure doesn't feel that way. Weigman starting in Week 1 almost seems like a done deal.

The A&M offensive line will also be improved from 2022, and that's paramount for success at the quarterback position, regardless of who's under center.

There's already talk of Weigman being the best quarterback in the SEC. We're not ready to make that call quite yet, but don't be surprised if 2023 isn't a breakout season for the Aggies and Weigman on the national stage.
