Aggies Coach Jimbo Fisher Hot Seat? Probably Not, Look at the Buyout!

It's safe to say Jimbo Fisher's tenure in College Station has not been what it was expected to be five years in when he was announced as the new head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies in December of 2017.

Fisher was expected to bring more credibility to a program that had already seen some success in the SEC but had yet to win the West or appear in an SEC Championship Game.

After yet another challenging 2022 with a 5-7 overall finish, the fans and the institution itself may be questioning the validity of Fisher's huge contract. It's a contract that was approved by the Board of Regents and includes an extension that began in 2022 and extends through 2031. It includes a $9 million annual salary in 2022 that increases $1 million each season throughout the end of the deal.

Is there any chance that if Fisher and the Aggies have yet another disappointing season in 2023 that the Board of Regents would just cut ties and take its losses?

Fisher's contract buyout is staggering for lack of a better word. If Fisher is fired after 2023, A&M would owe him $77 million. After the 2024 season that goes down to $68 million. After 2025, it's reduced to $58 million and goes down roughly $10 million each season.

What's more, 25 percent of the total buyout would be due 60 days after termination, with the rest of the balance paid out annually through 2031, the end of his contract.

A buyout of that magnitude means funds would be somewhat limited for other resources should Jimbo be fired.

But it only takes one good season to put all that talk behind us. Do Jimbo and the Aggies have a positive season ahead of them? Or will we be writing another article outlining the buyout amounts again next January? Time will tell.
