The Texas A&M Aggies football team has struggled at the quarterback position since the departure of Kellen Mond to the NFL Draft back in 2021.

The spring 2021 battle between Haynes King and Zach Calzada didn't turn out as expected with King winning the starter role then being sidelined for the season with an injury early in the year. Calzada performed admirably in King's stead but seemed overmatched in the SEC, save for the big win that year against Alabama.

Now we're approaching the 2023 season and both King and Calzada have moved on, and one of the biggest storylines for Jimbo Fisher's Aggies this spring is the quarterback competition between senior lefty Max Johnson and sophomore Conner Weigman.

While Weigman appears to be the frontrunner, Fisher still plays the ol' "we'll wait and see" game with the media and fans.

But nationally, at least, it appears Weigman is the guy, and College Sports Wire recently raked every starting SEC quarterback for the 2023 season. It appears Weigman is getting a lot of love, ranking No. 8 as the best returner in the league.

College Sports Wire stated, "After the failed tenure of Haynes King and an injury to Max Johnson, the Aggies finally turned to their five-star quarterback in 2022. In five games, he showed a lot of promise for a team that severely underperformed with a 5-7 record. With Weigman now viewed as a guy in College Station and with a new offensive coordinator, it will be a wait-and-see approach for Texas A&M. They have the talent but can they put it all together this season?"

What will help Weigman in the process? An Aggies' improved offensive line, something that King and Calzada did not have a couple of years ago. But Weigman has all the offensive weapons and a defense on the other side of the ball that could be dominating.

In five appearances including four starts last season, Weigman threw for 896 yards for 8 touchdowns and 0 interceptions, with a 55.3% completion percentage. Those numbers should go up this season if he starts the majority of the contests for A&M.

Can Weigman be "elite?" That remains to be seen, but he appears to have all the tools, plus a new offensive coordinator in Bobby Petrino to help him along.
