Jimbo Fisher: 'Everybody Is Wide Open' on Aggies Depth Chart

While Conner Weigman and Max Johnson still headline the Aggies' offseason questions, there are plenty of other positions still up for grabs according to coach Jimbo Fisher, setting up the Aggies for a competitive start to the season.

As the college football season continues to rapidly approach, one main question for the Texas A&M Aggies continues to be the quarterback battle.

Whether the Aggies' starter ends up being Conner Weigman or Max Johnson, coach Jimbo Fisher and company will look to find success after a year that seldom saw it — and from what Fisher's made clear so far, Texas A&M seems to be on track for that.

"[The quarterback battle] is still going." Fisher said in his weekly presser. "We haven’t announced anything yet. I’m pleased with both guys ... It’s like watching two great boxers go at it. One guy wins one round, and the other wins the next. I like watching these guys compete."

Naturally, Weigman and Johnson will headline the Aggies' offseason news, but apart from just the quarterback room, no other position group is truly set in stone.

“They’re all wide open," Fisher said. "Everybody is wide open. If the coaches are daily, the players are daily.”

A bold claim considering players like Ainias Smith and Demani Richardson will be returning after four seasons each with the Aggies, but if any coach has the experience to back up a philosophy like that, it's Fisher, who's won a national title.

But apart from Fisher, the players themselves have shown their competitive spirit in practice, looking to crack the depth chart on a program packed with prospective talent.

“[Practices have been good]," Fisher said. "Very physical. I thought the physicality was good on both lines of scrimmage. There was more consistency, which I like to see, in the execution of plays on both sides of the ball.”

"Only in one practice or two has one side really got the best of the other," he added. "You’re going to get stumped. Somebody is going to make plays against you, whether you’re on offense or defense. Minimizing the damage is what you want to see.”

With only nine days remaining until the Aggies' season opener against the New Mexico Lobos, questions regarding the depth chart still may not be fully answered, but a full game against a non-SEC opponent will likely be telling.

As long as Fishers' Aggies are still winning, the depth chart doesn't have to set just yet. But in time it will be — every position is wide open, after all.
