TCU Soccer: Castain, Heinrich Lead the Frogs to 2-0 Victory

Frogs have won four straight and are as hot as ever

The Horned Frogs got off to a dominating start on Thursday night against the Kansas State Wildcats. In the early going, TCU controlled much of the possession, working the ball through the midfield and spraying it out wide.

The earliest chance came in the 8th minute when A.J. Hennessey struck a right-footed shot that lasered off the post. TCU continued to pile on the pressure and grabbed a goal in the 14th minute courtesy of Seven Castain.

It was a beautiful assist from Camyrn Lancaster, who lofted a ball over the back line for an on-running Castain. But Castain still had work to do as she calmly sat a defender down and slotted it past Wildcat goalkeeper Murphy Scheaff.

Castain’s finish marks her team-leading 6th goal of the season. The second-year forward has found her stride after early-season lulls. As opposed to making runs behind the Wildcat backline, Castain provided as a target man, dropping in deep to receive the ball and subsequently laying it off to on running teammates.

The Frogs continued to dominate the match, utilizing their outside backs and working down the wings. In search of another goal, TCU’s Olivia Hasler surged down the left flank and found Sandra Jakobsen, who turned and curled a shot just wide of the far post.

TCU’s defense had a quiet first half as the Wildcats posed a minimal threat on attack. As a result, the Frogs went into halftime ahead with a 1-0 lead.

Coming out of the half, Kansas State began to show more signs of life. Attacking more so as opposed to their first-half selves, the Wildcats looked more convincing. Despite their efforts on the attack, the Frogs were disciplined in their defending, holding the Wildcats to minimal opportunities.

On the other end of the field, TCU had chances to double their advantage. Surging into the box, Lancaster found a ball into Gracie Brain. Flicking it on to Brenna Brosam, she had a shot from six yards out that was parried away by Scheaff. Then, in the 72nd minute, the Frogs nearly found the back of the net when Brain laced a left-footed shot that struck the crossbar.

In the 78th minute, the Frogs found a breakthrough. Brian neatly threaded a ball through to Skylar Heinrich, who placed it past Scheaf to make it 2-0.

The Frogs have now won 4 consecutive matches and remain undefeated in Big 12 Conference play. It will be a quick turnaround for the Frogs, who play host to Oklahoma State on Sunday, Oct. 1.
