Chase Dollander Gets Drafted Top-10 By Colorado

Former Tennessee Volunteers pitcher Chase Dollander was selected No. 9 by the Colorado Rockies in the 2023 MLB draft.

Chase Dollander was selected ninth overall on Sunday night by the Colorado Rockies in the 2023 MLB Draft. He was one of four SEC players drafted in the top 10, with just two other players in that range coming out of college. Dollander has been great for the Vols for two years, but the journey is longer than that

After starring at Greenbrier High School in Georgia, Dollander stayed home and attended Georgia Southern University. As a freshman, he pitched to a 4.04 ERA in 49 innings, including 5.2 against Tennessee, in which he allowed just one run and struck out eight batters. The Vols claimed him from the portal following that season, and he continued right where he left off, earning SEC pitcher of the year honors as a sophomore in large part due to a 2.39 ERA. As a junior, Dollander struck out 120 batters in 89 innings pitched, and putting the three years together, he did plenty to get the attention of MLB scouts. They don’t pick you for what you’ve done, though.

Looking towards the future, Dollander has the stuff to play in the major leagues. His fastball sits in the high 90s, and he has a tight mid-80s slider to play off of it. As a young player, he has already put work in to develop even more pitches, including a mid-70s curveball and an upper-80s changeup. These numbers were provided by MLB.com, the site of the league Dollander hopes to be pitching in in just a short time.
