Chronicling Tennessee's Evolving Rivalry with Mizzou

With the Missouri Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers meeting up on November 11th, here is a look back at the history between the two.

For the 12th overall time, the Tennessee Volunteers and Missouri Tigers will meet in Columbia, Missouri, on November 11th. It will be the sixth time the two teams have met in the Show-me state for a matchup, as the series dates back to 2012. Although they have played in Knoxville more, the Tigers and Vols are .500 against one another in Neyland Stadium (3-3). The Volunteers have a winning record against Missouri in Columbia (3-2). They have won twice in a row inside Faurot Field.

In 2021, the last time Tennessee played Missouri on the road, they won by a final score of 62-24 in dominant fashion. It was the largest margin of victory against the Tigers in the series until the Vols beat that margin by four points in Neyland during the 2022-23 season. The previous meet-up in Columbia was the closest margin of victory the Vols have had in the series back in 2019. The final score was 24-20 as then-Tennessee quarterback Jarrett Guarantano had a 400-yard game.

The two losses for the Vols in Faurot Field came in 2013 and 2017, two blowouts. Mizzou beat the Vols 31-3 and 50-17 in those matchups. In 2013, the Tigers quarterback Maty Mauk had a crazy game with 100+ yards both through the air and on the ground. He rounded out his day with three passing touchdowns. Missouri would win the east division that same season. In 2017, Missouri quarterback Drew Lock did similar work with a 200+ yard day through the air and had four touchdown passes to three different targets. Ironically enough, his then-offensive coordinator was Josh Heupel, who will be coaching on Tennessee's side once again this year.

The final meet-up between the teams was a 19-8 Vols win back in 2015. Running back Jalen Hurd helped Tennessee to victory by rushing for 151 yards. Tennessee quarterback Josh Dobbs had a rushing touchdown that day, to boot.
