Dylan Sampson & a Knack For The End Zone

Tennessee Volunteers running back Dylan Sampson has been a valuable member of the offense. After four games, he leads the squad in touchdowns.

Dylan Sampson lives within the Vols' loaded running back room. He is a 190-pound runner from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, playing his sophomore year with the Vols. Thus far, he has brought lots to what the Tennessee offense can do.

Despite missing out on the game against Florida, Sampson has had an active 2023 season through the first few games. He has 16 touches for 60 yards with three touchdowns in the opening game against Virginia. In the Virginia game, he also received a touchdown on a screen pass from quarterback Joe Milton III.  Although it may not be the sample size that shows prolonged success, it gives the college football world a taste of what he can do. He shows much potential to be a "two-way" back that thrives in both the rushing and receiving game. With a 190-pound frame, he can also be a threat in the open field and hard to bring down.

Offensive coordinator Joey Halzle spoke about Sampson in a press conference the week leading up to the UTSA matchup. "That's an electric guy with the ball in his hands. We got to find ways to get him the ball, whether handing it to him or throwing it to him. He is really good in the screen game." Sampson delivered, totaling 12 touches for 159 yards and two touchdowns. He was the most consistent part of their gameplan for the second time this year, and the bottom line is that he knows how to find the end zone.

Tennessee feels the need to use Sampson within the offense due to his play-making nature. It has been displayed throughout the first quarter or so of the season. This may help them open up the offense more if it is seemingly flat-lined due to self-inflicted errors against Florida. Sampson is not lost in the stable of running backs in Knoxville. He is thriving in it. He will be a force throughout his college career in orange and white.
