Kodi Burns Discusses Using His Experience as a QB to Teach Tennessee Receivers

Before coaching, Kodi Burns starred on the gridiron at Auburn and would be an eventual starter in the NFL. Burns's first two years at Auburn saw him play the quarterback position before transitioning to receiver his junior season. Burns situation at Auburn is similar to Jimmy Calloway and Jimmy Holiday's at Tennessee, as they are both converted quarterbacks.

"My story is very similar to a couple of guys we have on our team right now," Burns said. "I was a quarterback my entire life. That is what I did. That's who I was. I never caught a pass in my life. Once I was a junior in college, I ended up moving to receiver, and that transition for me was not that difficult because I understood coverages, I understood the run game, I understood the pass game, I understood leverage, I understood what defenses were trying to take away and do, so that made me more knowledgable as a player. I had to teach myself how to catch, which I did, and I ended up starting in the league. "

During Tuesday's media availability, Burns discussed Holiday using his experience as a quarterback to his benefit. While touching on how his lengthy experience as quarterback impacts his coaching style at the receiver position.

"Just the transition from quarterback to wide receiver, I think, is very simple from the standpoint of a knowledge aspect of the game," Burns said. "So, me and my coaching philosophy, I like to teach the wide receivers the position as a quarterback because I think it makes you a better receiver when you understand the game as a quarterback, not just what you do but understand the big picture and that makes you a better player overall."
