Report: Kevin Steele, Vols Nearing Two Key Coaching Hires

Jeremy Pruitt was terminated with cause on Monday afternoon, in addition to both linebackers coaches being terminated for cause. The move left Tennessee in need of a head coach, as well as four position coaches. Kevin Steele was named as interim head coach, and it appears he is fixing to get to make his first moves, according to a report from John Brice of FootballScoop.

Brice wrote: "Sources informed FootballScoop that Steele, officially the Vols’ interim coach following the program’s Monday firing of Jeremy Pruitt amidst both an internal and external investigation, is moving to reunite with veteran defensive assistant Rodney Garner. Additionally, Steele is discussing a plan to move former Vols standout linebacker Kevin Simon from his off-field role as director of player development into Tennessee’s linebackers coach’s position."

This is no indication that Kevin Steele is set to be Tennessee's next head coach, as both of these hires are no-brainers for Tennessee if they happen.

Simon was a star at Tennessee during his playing career, before departing for the NFL. Simon returned to Rocky Top in 2018 after scouting in the NFL, and he has served as a Director of Player Development. He was key in Henry To'o To'o's recruitment, while helping being an ambassador of what the program once was.

Garner previously coached at Tennessee, and he has most recently served as associate head coach and defensive line coach at Auburn, where he worked with Steele. Garner is known as one of the best recruiters in the country.

Steele will have other personnel decisions to make as well, as Tee Martin is currently 11 days from an expiring contract, and sources have indicated to VR2 on SI, his job status is up in the air. In addition to Martin, Tennessee will have to replace Will Friend on the offensive line.
