NBA Summer League Update: Chandler With A Key Play, Springer Continues To Shine

Tennessee Volunteers are everywhere in the NBA Summer League, but Kennedy Chandler and Jaden Springer took the headlines for the last couple of days.

Former Tennessee Volunteers have been making plays all summer. The NBA Summer League does a nice job of showcasing players fighting to make professional rosters, young players learning how the league works, and providing a central space for the NBA universe to collide. As we've learned this week, the University of Tennessee is an important part of that universe.

The Brooklyn Nets and Toronto Raptors were tied after 40 minutes of play in the Las Vegas NBA 2K24 Summer League on Thursday. With special rules for the tournament, seven points were added to the tie score of 91 for an Elam Ending. This meant that the first team to 98 would take the dub.

It was 93-93, and the Raptors had the ball - until they didn’t. Former Tennessee guard Kennedy Chandler hounded the ball handler, and former Texas A&M Aggie D. J. Hogg came up with the steal after Chandler knocked it away. Hogg took it the other way for a thunderous slam. The Nets took the lead 95-93 and never gave it back en route to a 99-94 win. Chandler may not have had his best or most efficient game, but he still found a way to make a positive impact when it matters most. These are the winning plays that coaches and scouts love to see in Summer League.

As for Jaden Springer, he has played well all summer. He led the 76ers in scoring on Friday, despite the nine-point loss. He dropped 15, and even though he wasn’t at his best, he was still the go-to option for Philly. Even with that output bringing his average down, he is still second in the Summer League with 26 points per game, trailing only Jabari Smith, although Smith only played two games. Even though Springer did not shoot particularly well on Friday, he had five steals to lead all players. In the end, former Missouri star Kobe Brown’s 35 points were too much for Philadelphia, but like Chandler, these winning plays, especially on the defensive end, will go a long way.
