Tobe Awaka And Team USA Roll Yet Again

Team USA advanced to the quarterfinals with a win on Wednesday, with Tennessee Volunteers forward Tobe Awaka at the forefront.

Tennessee Volunteers forward Tobe Awaka continues to grow into his game during his stint with Team USA in the FIBA Under-19 World Cup. He flashed signs of promise in 2022 for the Vols, but he's becoming a complete player during his summer, donning red, white, and blue.

Awaka and Team USA defeated China by a score of 92-69 on Wednesday in a FIBA Under-19 Men’s World Cup round of 16 game. Awaka once again earned the right to start and ran with the opportunity, posting a double-double. He scored 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field and 5-for-6 shooting from the free throw line. Awaka had 14 rebounds, including an impressive seven on the offensive end. His seven offensive rebounds were the most of any player in the game, and his seven on the defensive end led Team USA. The forward added two steals, and he logged the second-most minutes on the team with 19:45.

The game was never particularly close, with the United States dominating from the start, leading after the first quarter by a score of 22-9. China cut the lead to 10 after three quarters, but the United States closed strong in the fourth quarter, holding their opponent to just 10 points. In the quarterfinals, the US will face Japan, who is coming off of a 10-point victory over the host nation, Hungary. They did, however, finish just third in their group, going 1-2 in the group stage. The tilt is set for Friday, with the time to be announced.
