Joakim Dodson's WR Coach Breaks Down Tennessee's Latest Addition
Collierville High School wide receiver Joakim Dodson is the newest commit to the Tennessee 2025 recruiting class. He ranks as the No. 547 prospect in the 2025 class and is Tennessee's first receiver commit in the class. After Dodson committed, his wide receiver coach, Logan Johns, spoke with Volunteer Country about Dodson.
"I would say his attention to detail separates him from the average athlete. I send scouting reports weekly on the secondary we will play, and he will already have his own notes. Many of his notes are similar to mine, and whenever he makes a mistake, he already knows what he needs to fix. He can tell me before I even ask what adjustments he needs to make."
The wide receiver coach dives deeper into Dodson's on-field ability and what stands out the most. "How athletic he is. I have seen him make some crazy catches since he came to us halfway through his freshman year. The adjustments he makes with his body to make catches and misses getting hit by defenders are crazy for a kid his age. He had a catch at practice one day during 7v7 in which the QB threw the ball to the sideline, and it looked like it was going to go out of bounds. Joakim stopped and jumped, and somehow one hands it inbounds."
Johns talks about the leadership Dodson possesses. "He really came into his own as a leader last season. His sophomore year, he had a year to learn from two seniors, Noah Flaskamp (Missouri) and Austin Smith (Rhodes College), who worked hard every day and spoke when they needed to speak. I feel that helped Joakim get comfortable and actually became more vocal as that year went on. Flash forward to this past season. He was holding not only receivers accountable but also other players on the team, but Joakim isn't a rah-rah guy. He is good about knowing when his voice needs to be heard, and he is definitely a lead-by-example guy all the time. I can step away from Indy to set up another drill, and I know Joakim will lead our group."
Johns also goes on to say, "He is one of the best all-around young men I have had the privilege to coach. He is always respectful and works hard in the classroom. He takes honor classes, and he's on track to graduate early. I never had any issues with him. He was always smiling and joking around. If you know him, he is quiet when you first meet him. I had to get him out of his shell when we first met. I remember telling him it was ok to smile when he first came over, but I love that I got to know and coach him."
Johns has some high expectations for his student-athletes. "I know he will excel at the next level and do big things. He has worked so hard to be in the position. I know he's only going to keep going up. I know he pressures himself not only to do well in college but also to make it to the NFL. His hunger and determination will push him to achieve his dreams. I will always be proud of him, and I will always be one of his biggest supporters. I can't wait to see what his senior year is going to bring, and I am very excited to see him do what I already know he can do, and that's making plays at the next level."
