Tennessee Now Turns Its Attention To Bishop Boswell

After Ahmad Nowell committed to UConn, the Tennessee Volunteers could focus on another combo guard, Bishop Boswell.

Tennessee is not guard-needy in the 2024 class. While the team for 2023-24 is full of veterans, the Vols have two guys, Zakai Zeigler and Freddie Dilione, that can handle the ball and have multiple years of eligibility left. With that being said, you never know with the transfer portal when a kid could leave so that the Vols couldn't ignore the 2024 guard class. However, after missing out on their top ball handler target in Ahmad Nowell, the Vols will have to pivot, and the answer could be Bishop Boswell.

While Boswell isn't currently the caliber of player Nowell is, there are many things to like. I don't think Boswell will end up being a score-first guy in college, especially at a school like Tennessee, but it's easy to see why the Vols like him. Boswell has a good frame at 6-4 and 195 pounds, and on the defensive end, he knows how to use it. His ability to stay in front of defenders, combined with his frame, reminds me a lot of Jahmai Mashack. Of course, Boswell, as a recruit, is more polished offensively, with a smooth jumper and the ability to finish through guys at the rim.

One of the first things I noticed about Boswell is that I don't think calling him a combo guard is accurate. Myers Park, Boswell's high school, is a very good team, and another highly ranked rising senior in Sir Mohammed was the primary ball handler for them. When Boswell drives, his first instinct is almost always to score, and I think his ball handling is a work in progress. Those two things are clear signs that Boswell is strictly an off-ball guard. On July 14th, Boswell released his top 6, and Tennessee, along with Missouri, Wake Forest, Georgia, South Carolina, and Xavier, made the cut. With his current skillset, Boswell fits at Tennessee better than any other schools on the list, but if he wants to improve his offensive game, Wake Forest, Missouri, and Xavier are all good options. Despite only being offered in early July, Boswell has already scheduled a visit to Tennessee. He plans on or has already visited every school in his top 6 except for South Carolina.
