Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire Sends Clear Message About Future with Program

In this story:
The Texas Tech Red Raiders have established themselves as a premier football program.
They are coming off their best season in program history in 2025, and head coach Joey McGuire is a big reason why.
McGuire just completed his fourth season with the program and is set to enter his fifth this fall. While the Red Raiders fell short in 2025, the expectations are that McGuire will continue to lift them to new heights.
The 54-year-old head coach was hired in 2022 and recently signed a seven-year contract extension in early December 2025.
The contract reinforces his commitment to the program, and he’s backed that up by making it clear publicly as well.
In a recent appearance on the Jim Rome show, McGuire expressed his commitment to Texas Tech.
"That's why you never heard my name," McGuire said in regard to why his name was never in the coaching cycle. "My guys that represent me, they know 'do not put my name out there,' and that's how most coaches get their name out there, their agents are putting it out there. I told my guys, 'My name should ever be mentioned in any job.' because I have the best job in the country.
"There is no university more aligned when it comes to athletics and what they're trying to do in all their programs. I work for the best AD [athletic director] in the country."

Is Joey McGuire Building a College Football Powerhouse at Texas Tech?
McGuire has built the Red Raiders into a powerhouse in the college football landscape. In his time in Lubbock, he's led Tech to three consecutive bowl appearances, including the program's first College Football playoff appearance.
He's led the Red Raiders to a 35-18 record in his first four seasons. On top of that, McGuire became just the second head coach in school history to guide the Red Raiders to a bowl appearance in each of his first three seasons, joining Mike Leach, who accomplished the feat during his tenure in Lubbock.
In addition, McGuire made program history by becoming the first head coach to secure bowl victories in each of his first two seasons, with Texas Tech defeating the Ole Miss Rebels in the Texas Bowl and the California Golden Bears in the Independence Bowl.
Last season, McGuire guided the Red Raiders to the No. 4 seed in the College Football Playoff, completing an 11-1 regular season with each win by at least 20 points.
Tech made its first Big 12 championship appearance against the BYU Cougars and took home the crown.
Prior to that contest, the Red Raiders and McGuire agreed to a new seven-year contract.
"We believe the future of Texas Tech Football has never been brighter under Coach McGuire's leadership," athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in a statement. "Our success this season is not a one-year plan. We fully intend to be an annual contender in the Big 12 Conference with our eyes on the College Football Playoff each and every season. We have the right leader in Coach McGuire to keep elevating this program, and this contract extension is a reflection of our investment in sustaining this success for years to come."
McGuire got his first crack as head coach in Lubbock, and he has no plans to leave.
