Longhorns Make Top 4 for 5-Star PF Asa Newell

In this story:
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns are getting closer to the start of the 2023-24 season, but coach Rodney Terry is still busy on the recruiting trail.
On Wednesday, 2024 five-star forward Asa Newell of Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) revealed his final four commitment choices, and the Longhorns made the cut. He's clearly got his eyes set on the SEC, as Newell will be choosing between Texas, Alabama, Georgia or Gonzaga. He also received offers from Indiana, Baylor, Auburn, Kansas and Michigan among others.
The Longhorns have already landed a commitment from 2024 guard Cam Scott.
Newell's took an official visit to Austin on Sept. 8. He's already visited Alabama and Gonzaga but has visits set for Auburn this weekend and Georgia the weekend of Oct. 7.
Though he and Dillon Mitchell just missed each other as teammates at Montverde, the Longhorns still have some notable connections to Newell, which would ideally play a role in potentially landing a commitment. But of course, recruiting competition is steep for a player of Newell's caliber.
Current Texas freshman guard Chris Johnson played with Newell at Montverde last season. The Longhorns are also in the final options for Newell's teammates, Liam McNeeley (Top 3) and Curtis Givens (Top 7).
However, McNeeley recently cancelled his Texas visit after originally planning to arrive in Austin this weekend.
In October 2022, McNeeley, Johnson and Newell all took the floor together as starters at Montverde.

Newell told On3 what he likes about Texas:
“I talk with Coach Brandon (Chappell) there. I’m trying to set a visit up there for after Geico," Newell told On3 in Dec. 2022. "They’re a winning program and have been doing a good job this year, playing with a lot of energy and running the floor. That is kind of how I play as well. They bring a lot of intensity on both ends of the floor.”
Terry and the Longhorns will be hoping to snag a commitment from Newell as they look for their second pledge of the 2024 class.
Texas begins its season at home against Incarnate Word on Monday, Nov. 6.
