Longhorns 2023 Signee Ron Holland Named Texas Gatorade Player of Year

Ron Holland is one of two signees in the incoming 2023 class for the Texas Longhorns, joining Southern California Academy (Castaic, CA) guard AJ Johnson.

Duncanville 2023 forward and Texas Longhorns signee Ron Holland has been named the Gatorade Texas State Player of the Year, per an announcement Wednesday.

Holland is one of two signees in the incoming class, joining Southern California Academy (Castaic, CA) guard AJ Johnson. He's the third player from Duncanville's elite hoops program to win the award and joins an elite group of former winners that includes former and current NBA stars like Chris Bosh, Marcus Smart, De'Aaron Fox and the great Shaquille O'Neal.

Holland averaged 20.3 points and 10.1 rebounds this past season for Duncanville. His warm-up to the season certainly helped, as he named to the Team USA roster for the Nike Hoop Summit in April.

“Holland has impacted winning as the best and most versatile defender in the ESPN 100,” ESPN's national recruiting director Paul Biancardi said in a release. “He can guard multiple positions and can seamlessly switch when defending in the halfcourt. He has the personality and mindset to outwork his opponent — the ultimate glue guy despite possessing the ability to score in the paint or from the perimeter. He’s also a consummate winner at every level, including with USA Basketball in each of the last two summers.”

The second-seeded Longhorns are set to take on the 15th-seeded Colgate Raiders in the Round of 64 at Wells Fargo Arena on Thursday, a stage Holland will hope to play on once he joins the program.
