Longhorns WR Xavier Worthy a Heisman Contender?

247Sports’ Josh Pate believes Texas Longhorn wide receiver Xavier Worthy has Heisman Trophy potential.

Before Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian was hired on the Forty Acres, he spent his time as the offensive coordinator for Alabama. While a part of the Crimson Tide coaching staff in 2020, Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith was named the Heisman Trophy winner.

Before Smith, the last non-quarterback Heisman winner was Derrick Henry, Alabama running back in 2015. Although it is not common for a non-quarterback to take home the Heisman Trophy, 247Sports’ Josh Pate believes that Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy may have a chance.

"That is the player that I would go bet some money on," Pate said.

In 2022, Worthy suffered from a hand injury that could have possibly caused him to have a less productive year, along with a change in quarterback due to injury mid-season. However, Pate expects Worthy to bounce back this upcoming season to his freshman All-American stature and talent.

As a freshman for the Longhorns, Worthy was shockingly impressive to be a first-year player. With 981 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, Worthy earned himself the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year title.

His 2022 injury-filled down year consisted of 760 receiving yards and nine touchdowns which resulted in Second Team All-Big 12 honors.

If Texas starting quarterback Quinn Ewers and Worthy can continuously develop and expand their chemistry and relationship on the field, they will be the dynamic duo to keep an eye on and their connection may aid Worthy for a potential Heisman title.
