What Longhorns Are Taking Part in Super Bowl LVIII?

In Super Bowl LVIII, the presence of two former Longhorns, Kyle Shanahan from the 49ers and Charles Omenihu from the Chiefs, highlights Texas's representation on the grand stage of football.

Super Bowl LVIII will begin at 5:30 p.m. CT, hosted at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. The game will be broadcast on CBS.

This year, Texas Football will be represented by two distinguished individuals: Charles Omenihu, a defensive end for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Kyle Shanahan, the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

It's impressive to see the representation of Texas Football in the Super Bowl once again, with Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu making his mark as a former Longhorn.

Interestingly enough his journey from college to the NFL, landed him on both Super Bowl teams moving from the Texans to the 49ers and now with the Chiefs. Omenihu's achievements as a Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year and his contributions to the Longhorns' success are noteworthy making it exciting for fans to see him compete at the highest level in the Super Bowl.

Shanahan, originally from Englewood, Colorado, made his mark at Texas as a non-scholarship wide receiver, earning two letters during his tenure from 2001 to 2002.

Transitioning from player to coach, he embarked on his coaching career as a graduate assistant at UCLA after graduating. His journey in the NFL began with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he served as an offensive quality control coach from 2004 to 2005.

Shanahan joined the Houston Texans in 2006 as a wide receivers coach and swiftly ascended within the organization. Assuming the role of coaching the team's quarterbacks in 2007, Shanahan's adept leadership led him to serve as the Texans' offensive coordinator from 2008 to 2009.

Over the next seven years, he continued to excel as an offensive coordinator in various roles before taking the helm as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 2017.

Under Shanahan's guidance, the 49ers clinched three NFC West titles, showcasing his aptitude as a coach. Notably, Shanahan led the 49ers to Super Bowl LIV, where they faced the Kansas City Chiefs in a memorable showdown, ultimately falling short with a score of 31-20.

With this accomplishment, Shanahan joined an elite group, alongside Tom Landry, as one of the few Texas Football lettermen to lead an NFL team to the Super Bowl as a head coach.
