Longhorn Track Star Julien Alfred Has Made Historic Sprint to Record Books

Julien Alfred, Texas Longhorns track and field star, may just be the best sprinter to ever wear burnt orange. With a tremendous year behind her back, Alfred has rewritten both Texas' and the NCAA's record book.
“I’m a winner and I like to win and that’s what drives me to be the best,” Alfred said to KXAN.
Alfred has etched her name into the Longhorn record book as the greatest sprinter to step foot on the Forty Acres. She holds UT's record in the 60, 100 and 200, and the NCAA record for her her 60-meter time of 6.97 seconds.
Alfred also aided the women's 400-meter relay team in breaking the collegiate record at 42 seconds flat.
“I’d have to say she’s No. 1," Longhorns legend Eric Metcalf told the Austin-American Statesman. "We have had a lot of great track athletes on the Forty Acres, but she has led the team to national titles, won titles as an individual, and set collegiate records as an individual and on relays. No one has done what she has.”
Alfred is an 11-time All-American and recently won this year’s USTFCCA Indoor Female Track Athlete of the Year title. While track and field may strictly be seen as a physical sport from the outside, mentality plays a bigger part than one may think, especially for Alfred.
“Seeing myself and picturing myself as one of the best, has helped me a lot,” Alfred said to KXAN.
However, no matter how decorated Alfred may be, she is always striving for improvement.
“I think having the mindset that there’s somebody coming and trying to stay on top," Alfred said to KXAN, "I think has really been a booster for me and just really not getting comfortable where I’m at.”
