Top Dogs? Where Do Texas Longhorns Stand in National WR Rankings?

The Texas Longhorns might have the best wide receiver group in the Big 12, and beyond.

The Texas Longhorns football roster for the 2023 season has recently caught the eye of many fans, along with the offensive rankings that look toward the start of the season. So where do Texas' receivers stand and which program has the best wideout groups?

With the second transfer portal window coming to a close and the conclusion of spring practice games, evaluations of positional unit rankings have begun.

10 of the Longhorns' 11 starters on offense have returned to a burn orange jersey as well as holding the title of the No. 3 recruiting class of the 2023 cycle nationally.

A popular topic of conversation this past offseason and throughout the spring game discussion has been Texas's quarterback trio in Quinn Ewers, Malik Murphy and Arch Manning. However, the Longhorns' stacked receivers are high on college position rankings.

On3 Sports recently started to rank 2023 season stand-out position groups for college football. Receiver rankings were released yesterday and the Longhorns were placed in near the top at No. 2, just behind Ohio State.

Said On3:

If not for Ohio State, the Longhorns would have the best receiver corps in 2023, with a dynamic trio in Xavier Worthy, AD Mitchell and Jordan Whittington.

Worthy is a future 1st Round pick, while Mitchell, who transferred from Georgia this offseason, has similar upside and has been a key playmaker for the Bulldogs in multiple College Football Playoff games. Whittington isn’t flashy but the veteran is a reliable target who can play multiple spots.

Texas also has the luxury of backups like Isaiah Neyor, who was a big-time transfer addition last year but tore his ACL in fall camp, and 5-star freshman Johntay Cook II — both of whom would start for most schools.

Whittington is a veteran receiver who is an experienced and reliable target. Georgia transfer, Mitchell, has been a standout playmaker for Georgia during playoff games. Worthy is likely to get snatched in the draft early on.

Not only this, but as On3 points out, Texas has reliable back-ups for the three starters in Isaiah Neyor, a transfer addition last season who ended up tearing his ACL in fall camp, and Johnny Cook II, a 5-star freshman.

Ohio State, meanwhile, has taken the No. 1 slot in the 2023 Receiver Unit Rankings for the third straight year.
