UNC loses Cam Kelly for the rest of the season with torn ACL

North Carolina suffered another blow as it was announced on Saturday afternoon that safety Cam Kelly will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his ACL in the Tar Heels' loss to Clemson.

He had surgery on Thursday to repair the ACL.

Kelly, a highly-touted freshman, began the season as a special teams contributor before moving into a starting role against the Tigers, replacing the injured Myles Wolfolk.

In the fourth quarter, Kelly suffered the injury on a Trevor Lawrence run, appearing to bang his knee on Aaron Crawford's helmet in the process of making the stop.

Wolfolk is out indefinitely after being injured against Appalachian State, while starting cornerback Patrice Rene was lost for the season to a torn ACL in the Miami game.

Kelly, considered a four-star recruit by 247 Sports, originally enrolled at Auburn before transferring to Carolina in April. He was declared eligible to play just days before the season-opener vs. South Carolina.

In his absence, freshman Don Chapman is likely to step into a larger role.
