Sam Howell arrived in Chapel Hill with a reputation for his focus on the details.

Coaches and teammates have raved about his propensity to show up early and stay late, whether its in the film room or in the practice facility, getting in extra work with his receivers.

Even in high school, he was known for meeting up with his quarterback trainer, Anthony Boone, to break down film after his Friday night games at Sun Valley High School.

Just how focused, no one really knew until Tuesday night when he was asked exactly how much film he studies on a daily basis.

“It’s a good amount," Howell said, before breaking it down.

On Sundays, he and offensive coordinator Phil Longo go back and review the previous game and grade the good and the bad, with Howell taking notes on what he'll need to improve.

In his notebook, he compares the coaching points he wrote down in their pregame assessment of an opponent vs. the points that he and Longo discuss.

From there, his work with Longo is entirely focused on the next opponent, but that won't be the last time Howell reviews the tape of the previous game, pointing out that he'll go back and study it again to ensure he's soaking up every possible detail.

Whether it's at the Kenan Football Center with Longo or all alone back in his dorm room, Howell decided on a number for the amount of time he spends daily studying himself and the Carolina offense along with defenses and how he might be able to exploit it.

"It’s probably close to five hours, honestly," he said. "To play this position, that’s what you’ve got to put in.”
