Stackhouse, Commodores Victorious In Season Opener

Vanderbilt notched their first win of the 2019-20 basketball season on Wednesday defeating Southeast Missouri 83-65, and in the process made a winner of coach Jerry Stackhouse in his regular season debut on the Commodores bench.
Aaron Nesmith, a preseason All-SEC second team selection led all scorers with 25 points, and nailing 7 three-point baskets to power the Commodores to the win.
The Commodores built a double didget advantage in the first half only to allow SEMO to rally and ties the game at 32-32 at halftime.
Nesmith took over for the Commodores in the second half, knocking down five of his seven three-pointers in the second stanza.
Clevon Brown added 15 points on 6 of 9 shooting in support of Nesmith as the only other Commodore player un double figures for the game. Brown also grabbed a team high eight rebounds in 31 minutes of game time.
As a team, the Commodores shot just under 50%, going 30 of 61 from the floor, good for 49.2 % on the night.
Vanderbilt relied heavily on long range shots, attemptgin 34 of their 61 field goals from beyond the arc. The Commodores connected on 14 of those three-point attempts, good for 41.2 % from long range.
Another positive for Stackhouse, his team committed just 12 turnovers in the win, an improvement from their exhibition game where the Commodores turned the ball over 28 times.
The Commodores also grabbed 35 rebounds, 10 offensive and 25 defensive, but were outrebounded for the game by the Cardinals.
Freshman Scottie Pippen Jr. led the Commodores with 6 assist along with 7 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. He also committed turnovers in 27 minutes of action.
Chris Harris lead Southeast Missouri in scoring with 15 points, going 6 of 9 from the floor and 2 of 3 from downtown in 27 minutes of action.
Vanderbilt returns to action Monday, Nov. 11 as they play host to Texas A&M Corpus Christi at Memorial Gym in a 7pm tipoff.
