Entering the 2019 season it was clear that the Vanderbilt Commodores offense had an aresenal of talents in their "Big 3" with running back Ke'Shawn Vaughn, tight end Jared Pinkney and receiver Kalijah Lipscomb.

As the old saying goes, you can never have enough weapons. That's especially true when you are Vanderbilt, or really any team playing in the SEC where there is so much talent all over the field on both sides of the ball for every team. Developing the talent you have and getting those weapons on the field are key.

The Commodores are seeing one such talented player develop this season in redshirt freshman receiver Cam Johnson.

A native of Middle Tennessee, and a standout at prep power Brentwood Academy, Johnson has become a reliable, and productive option in the passing game for the Commodores and quarterback Riley Neal.

Though the first four games of the season,  Johnson has seen his targets, receptions and yards increase despite the presence of others at his position like Chris Pierce, C.J. Boler and Justice Shelton-Mosley who all entered the season at least percievably ahead of Johnson.

In week one, Johnson managed two receptions for 14 yards. That number increased the following week when he was the recipient of three catches for 31 yards. In game three against LSU, Johnson saw his receptions go down but his yards again increase as he had two receptions for 54 yards.

Last Saturday was Johnson's biggest day to date as a Commodores, snaring six balls for 64 yards in the Commodores first win of the season over Northern Illinois.

The Commodores are still a work in progress this seasonon both sides of the ball, but one area where things are noticably improving each week is at receiver, and the emergance of Cam Johnson is a big part of whatthis offense will have to count if they are to secure five more wins this season and earn a bowl game at the end.

Vanderbilt gets their first shot at win number two this coming Saturday in Oxford, Mississippi against Ole Miss in a 6:30 PM kickoff at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
