Bulldogs Run Over Vandy For SEC East Win

The Georgia Bulldogs possess on of the deepest stables of running backs in the country, and they used the majority of them in their season opening 30-6 win over Vanderbilt inside Vanderbilt Stadium on Saturday night.

Led by D'Andre Swift, 16 carries, 147 yards and Brian Herrion,(12 carries 65 yards, 1 TD the Bulldogs employed six backs to grind the Commodores defense into submission as they ran the football 40 times for 323 yards and two touchdowns.

Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm was solid but not spectacular, though with their running game doing the heavy lifting, Fromm did not have to shine. He finished the game 15 of 23 for 156 yards and a touchdown.

His counterpart, Vanderbilt quarterback Riley Neal, starting his first game as a Commodore struggled against the relentless pressure of the Bulldogs front seven, managing just 85 yards through the air, completing 14 or 25 attempts.

While Neal took car of the football he was constantly under pressure and forced to check downs repeatedly. So much so that Ke'Shawn Vaughn lead the team in receptions and yards, managing three catches for 24 yards,

On the ground, Vanderbilt rushed for 109 yards, with Vaughn accounting for 74 yards on 15 attempts.

Kalija Lipscomb and Jared Pinkney combined for just five receptions and 19 yards as Lipscomb tied Vaughn for the team high in receptions, but managed just 8 yards. Pinkney was limited to two catches for 11 yards. On one drive, Pinkney was flagged twice, once as an illegal reciever downfield and the for holding. Those penaltied stalled what was the best Commodore drive of the night and forced head coach Derek Mason to settle for a field goal.

Defensively the Commodores faced 65 offensive plays from the Bulldogs, and allowing Fromm and company just 9 second half points. It was the first quarter where the Commodores defense gave up 21 points and staked Georgia to a lead that was never in danger.

Vanderbilt returns to action next Saturday with a noon kickoff locally at Ross-Ade Stadium as the take on the Purdue Boilermakers in West Lafayette, Indiana.
