The college football recruiting season is in full swing, and the Vanderbilt Commodores staff of head coach Derek Mason have been blessed with more time to put into their efforts during the pandemic.

In having extra time to evaluate potential players, coaches have possibly offered more scholarships to players in this cycle than ever before, and many players are making their decisions earlier in the process to guarantee their place among the recruits in the school of their choice.

Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, Texas, is home to SI All-American candidate running back Alton McCaskill, who currently holds 28 offers from colleges across the nation. Along with Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Auburn, and Ole Miss from the SEC are included in that number. Other Power Five offers include Michigan, Duke, Florida State, Kansas State, Penn State, Syracuse, USC, UCLA, and Notre Dame.

When it comes to describing McCaskill, the first word used is speed, which includes a reported 10.95 100-meters in March. He is a threat to score from anywhere anytime he touches the football.

While he is not the strongest back in this class, his body is that which could add more muscle and strength without negatively impacting his speed.

Evaluators believe there is NFL talent in McCaskill, which must be developed at the college level. Still, any player carrying that tag will be expected to be an impact performer wherever he calls home at the next level.

Auburn appears as the current leader for McCaskill, though it is not by much, and there has been no narrowing of the list or date set for any information on a possible decision.

It appears that McCaskill could be more of a three-down back because of his ability as a receiver out of the backfield, though his blocking could be a question mark.

Still, the upside, speed, and ability could be a game-changer for a team like Vanderbilt, who is looking to add more speed and playmakers in the following classes.

It might be a tough sell for Derek Mason and company to grab this elite Lone Star State talent, but he is precisely the type player you must recruit even if you are unsuccessful.
