The Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Monday evening its new football scheduling model, adapted as the result of the additions of Cal, Stanford, and SMU beginning next summer. With the ACC having 17 schools starting in 2024, the new scheduling model stipulates 16 annual "protected matchups" and all ACC teams will face each other at least twice over the next seven seasons.

Virginia's annual opponents will be North Carolina and Virginia Tech, retaining the South's Oldest Rivalry and the Commonwealth Clash on an annual basis. As for the new members in the conference, UVA will first face SMU next season and then will travel to play Stanford and host Cal during the 2025 season. As part of the new scheduling model, the current 14 conference teams will play in the state of California three times each in the next seven years and none of the current members will travel to California in back-to-back seasons.

There were some notable changes made to the 2024 Virginia football schedule as a result of the new scheduling model. Most significantly, of course, UVA is now hosting SMU in 2024, the first season the Mustangs will be in the ACC. Additionally, the Cavaliers are no longer hosting Florida State or Wake Forest as originally scheduled. UVA will instead host Boston College and play at Wake Forest next season, while FSU is no longer on Virginia's 2024 schedule. That game at Wake Forest replaces a previously scheduled road game at Duke for Virginia and the Blue Devils and Cavaliers will not play at all in 2024. The road games at Clemson, Pittsburgh, and Virginia Tech will be played as originally scheduled.
