Texas won this contest.

On Friday night, Aaron Butler, a touted 4-star wide receiver from Calabasas, California, chose the Longhorns over Washington and Arizona, picking the Huskies' Sugar Bowl opponent.

Thus ended a concentrated back-and-forth recruiting dance between the UW and the Southern California recruit, on in which a lot of people assumed the Huskies would win.

Twelve months ago, the 6-foot-1 and 170-pound receiver took an unofficial visit to Montlake with his father, Robb-Davon Butler, and scheduled an official visit to Washington for June.

The 4-star recruit never took that trip to Seattle. Butler instead committed to the Colorado Buffaloes and coach Deion Sanders on May 16.

As the UW continued to march through an unbeaten season, and CU lost eight of its last nine games, both UW wide-receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard and Butler kept in contact.

The mutual interest led to Butler and his mother Courtney taking another unofficial visit on Nov. 25 when UW faced Washington State in the Apple Cup.

Two weeks later, Butler backed off his pledge to the Buffaloes.

After taking an official visit to Arizona on Dec. 15 and hosting coaches from Texas for an in-home visit, Butler made schools wait another two days after the first signing deadline arrive to reveal his college choice.

In 15 career games for Calabasas High, the receiver caught 66 passes for 1,416 yards and 18 touchdowns.

247Sports ranks Butler as the No. 130 overall recruit in the 2024 recruiting class and the No. 28 wide receiver in the country.
